Do you need an eSIM for Hungary?
How to decide, how much data a trip takes and how to set it up before you fly. We show no plan prices: compare plans on the provider’s site.
Should you get one?
- Check your own plan first. A plan from an EU or EEA country normally works in Hungary at home prices, so an eSIM may not be needed.
- Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do.
- You keep your own number. A data eSIM sits next to your normal SIM, and you can keep using WhatsApp over its data.

How much data for a trip to Hungary?
A rule of thumb for planning, not a provider’s plan. Pick a plan at least this big, and check how long it stays valid.
| Use | 3 days | 7 days | 14 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light · Maps, messages, the odd photo | 1 GB | 3 GB | 5 GB |
| Normal · Maps, social media, some video | 3 GB | 5 GB | 10 GB |
| Heavy · Lots of video, hotspot for a laptop | 5 GB | 15 GB | 30 GB |
Set it up before you fly
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
- Choose a plan that covers Hungary, with enough data for your days.
- Install it on Wi-Fi before you travel, following the provider’s steps (usually a QR code).
- Switch it on when you land and turn data roaming on for the eSIM. Keep the normal SIM’s data off to avoid roaming charges.

Questions
Do I need an eSIM for Hungary?
If your phone plan comes from an EU or EEA country, using it in Hungary is usually included at home prices, so you may not need one. If your plan is from outside the EU, or you need a lot of data, a travel eSIM can still be cheaper than roaming. Check your own plan first.
Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked (not tied to one operator). Most phones from the last few years do. Check the phone’s settings or the maker’s list before you buy.
Can I keep my own number and WhatsApp?
Yes. A data eSIM is added next to your normal SIM. Your own number stays on the normal SIM and you can keep using WhatsApp and other apps over the eSIM’s data.
When should I install it?
Install it before you fly, on Wi-Fi, but switch it on only when you land, because the plan’s validity usually starts at first connection or on the date you choose. Read the plan’s start rule.
How much data do I need in Hungary?
As a rule of thumb: about 2 GB for a light week (maps and messages), about 5 GB for a normal week with social media, and 10 GB or more if you stream video or share your connection. The table above gives numbers for 3, 7 and 14 days. These are estimates, not plans.
